GPC2

Description

The GPC2 (glypican 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

Glypican 2 (GPC2), also known as cerebroglycan, is a protein encoded by the GPC2 gene in humans. The GPC2 gene is located at 7q22.1 and encodes a 579 amino acid protein. The C-terminus of GPC2 contains the GPI attachment site at G554, and the N-terminus encodes a signal peptide from M1 to S24. Multiple GPC2 mRNA transcripts have been identified, with GPC2-201 being the isoform overexpressed in pediatric cancers. Exon 3 of GPC2, which is tumor-associated, shows the lowest expression in normal tissues compared to other exons. GPC2 is a glycophosphatidylinositol-linked integral membrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan found in the developing nervous system. It is involved in cell adhesion and is thought to regulate the growth and guidance of axons. GPC2 has a particularly high affinity for laminin-1. GPC2 has been identified as a therapeutic target in neuroblastoma in two independent studies published in 2017.

Glypican-2 is a cell surface proteoglycan that carries heparan sulfate. It is thought to play a role in the movement of developing neurons.
