GPC1

Description

The GPC1 (glypican 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

Glypican-1 (GPC1) is a protein encoded by the GPC1 gene in humans. The GPC1 gene is located at 2q37.3 on human chromosome 2 and encodes a protein with 558 amino acids and three predicted heparan sulfate chains. Glypican-1 is a cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan, a type of protein anchored to the cell membrane via a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol linkage. These proteins are part of the glypican-related integral membrane proteoglycan family (GRIPS) and may play a role in controlling cell division and growth regulation. Glypican-1 has been shown to interact with SLIT2. Glypican-1 has been implicated in the misfolding of normal prion proteins in the cell membrane into the infectious prion form. In 2015, researchers reported that the presence of Glypican-1 in exosomes in patients' blood could detect early pancreatic cancer with absolute specificity and sensitivity. However, this conclusion is disputed.

GPC1 is also known as glypican.
