GNGT2

Description

The GNGT2 (G protein subunit gamma transducin 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

GNGT2 is a signaling protein encoded by the GNGT2 gene in humans and other vertebrates. It is the gamma subunit of transducin (Gt), a G protein found in the retina's rod and cone cells, playing a critical role in phototransduction. Notably, GNGT2 is specifically found in cone cells, while its counterpart, GNGT1, is present in rod cells. Beyond its role in vision, GNGT2 is expressed in various tissues, including monocytes of the immune system. Elevated GNGT2 levels have been linked to certain cancers, suggesting its potential as a prognostic marker. The GNGT2 gene exhibits multiple transcript variants, indicating the use of alternative polyadenylation sites.

GNGT2 is also known as G-GAMMA-8, G-GAMMA-C, GNG9, GNGT8, HG3I.
