GNGT1

Description

The GNGT1 (G protein subunit gamma transducin 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

GNGT1 gene encodes the gamma subunit (Gγ) of transducin, a heterotrimeric G-protein specifically expressed in rod cells of the vertebrate retina. Transducin consists of three subunits: alpha, beta, and gamma. GNGT1 is unique to rod cells, while its counterpart, GNGT2, is found in cone cells. Both GNGT1 and GNGT2, along with their respective alpha subunits, are involved in phototransduction, the process by which light is converted into electrical signals in the retina.

G proteins act as signal transducers in a variety of transmembrane signaling systems. The beta and gamma subunits of G proteins are crucial for GTPase activity, facilitating the exchange of GDP for GTP and mediating interactions between the G protein and its downstream effectors.

GNGT1 is also known as GNG1, HG3G1.
