Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM): An Aggressive Brain Cancer

Description:

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive and common type of brain cancer, originating in the brain's glial cells. These cells normally support and protect neurons, but in GBM, they become cancerous and grow uncontrollably. GBM tumors are often large, diffuse, and highly vascularized, making them difficult to treat.

Associated Diseases:

Several genetic and environmental factors have been linked to GBM. These include:

  • Genetic abnormalities: Mutations in genes such as EGFR, PTEN, and IDH1 are commonly found in GBM.
  • Family history: Individuals with a family history of GBM are at an increased risk of developing the disease.
  • Radiation exposure: Exposure to high levels of radiation, such as from X-rays or radiation therapy for other cancers, can increase the risk of GBM.
  • Smoking: Current and former smokers are more likely to develop GBM than non-smokers.

Did you Know ?

GBM is the leading cause of brain cancer deaths worldwide, accounting for approximately 50% of all primary brain tumors.
