GKAP1

Description

The GKAP1 (G kinase anchoring protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

GKAP1 plays a crucial role in insulin signaling in adipocytes. It regulates the phosphorylation of IRS1, a key protein in insulin signaling, by controlling its accessibility to the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase. This interaction is essential for the insulin-induced movement of the glucose transporter GLUT4 (SLC2A4) to the cell membrane, facilitating glucose uptake. Additionally, GKAP1 is involved in the disruption of insulin signaling caused by TNF (tumor necrosis factor), further highlighting its importance in insulin sensitivity.

GKAP1 is also known as FKSG21, GKAP42.
