Gout: An Inflammatory Joint Disease

Description

Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when uric acid crystals accumulate in and around the joints, causing sudden and severe pain, swelling, and redness. Uric acid is a waste product produced when the body breaks down purines, which are found in certain foods and tissues. Typically, uric acid is dissolved in the blood and excreted through the kidneys in the urine. However, in some individuals, uric acid levels can become elevated (hyperuricemia), leading to its crystallization and deposition in the joints.

Associated Diseases

Gout is often associated with certain underlying medical conditions that increase the production or decrease the excretion of uric acid, including:

  • Obesity: Overweight and obese individuals have higher levels of uric acid production.
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure): Certain blood pressure medications, such as diuretics, can interfere with uric acid excretion.
  • Kidney disease: Impaired kidney function can reduce the elimination of uric acid from the body.
  • Diabetes: People with diabetes may have higher levels of uric acid due to insulin resistance.

Approximately 8.3 million adults in the United States have gout, with men being more commonly affected than women.
