G6PD Deficiency

G6PD deficiency, also known as Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase deficiency, is a genetic disorder that affects red blood cells. It is caused by a deficiency in the enzyme G6PD, which plays a crucial role in protecting red blood cells from certain oxidative stresses. When someone with G6PD deficiency is exposed to certain triggers such as certain foods, medications, or infections, their red blood cells can break down prematurely, leading to a condition known as hemolysis.
