Ribavirin
Description
Ribavirin is a synthetic nucleoside analog with broad-spectrum antiviral activity. It is used in combination therapy for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in infants. Ribavirin works by interfering with viral RNA synthesis, ultimately inhibiting viral replication. It is available in oral and inhalation forms, depending on the indication. Ribavirin‘s mechanism of action involves the inhibition of viral RNA polymerase and the induction of mutations in the viral genome, leading to viral inactivation. It is important to note that ribavirin has several potential side effects, including anemia, birth defects, and teratogenicity, making it crucial for proper patient selection and careful monitoring during treatment.
