Lovastatin
Description
Lovastatin, also known by the brand name Mevacor, is a prescription medication classified as a statin. It works by blocking the production of cholesterol in the liver, thereby reducing the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol, in the bloodstream. This reduction in LDL cholesterol helps to prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries, which is a major factor in the development of heart disease. Lovastatin is commonly prescribed for individuals with high cholesterol levels, especially those who have a history of heart disease or are at high risk of developing it.
