Stretch Marks

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are indented streaks that appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks, or other places on the body. They’re common in pregnant women, especially during the last trimester.

Impact of Gene Variants

Genetic factors significantly influence the risk of stretch marks. Certain genes may be involved in repairing damage to the skin when it expands (like in the case of weight gain). In people with certain changes in these genes, the repair may not occur well; hence, collagen/elastin damage can cause stretch marks.

Ways to Recognize Problems

Symptoms of stretch marks include indented lines or streaks on your skin, which can vary in length and width. They can be pink, purple, red, bluish, or dark brown streaks — this color marks can vary, depending on your skin color.

Ways to Improve

There are several treatments available to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, including topical creams, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion.
