Description
The ZNF638 (zinc finger protein 638) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.
ZNF638 is a protein that is encoded by the ZNF638 gene in humans. It is located in the nucleus and binds to cytidine-rich sequences in double-stranded DNA. ZNF638 has three types of domains: MH1, MH2 (repeated three times), and MH3. It is involved in packaging, transferring, or processing transcripts. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene, but the biological validity of some variants has not been determined. ZNF638 interacts with FHL2.
ZNF638 binds to cytidine clusters in double-stranded DNA, playing a crucial role in silencing unintegrated retroviral DNA. It represses transcription of unintegrated viral DNA by recruiting chromatin silencers like the HUSH complex, SETDB1, and histone deacetylases HDAC1 and HDAC4. ZNF638 also functions as an early regulator of adipogenesis, acting as a transcription cofactor for CEBPs (CEBPA, CEBPD, and/or CEBPG) and controlling the expression of PPARG and other proadipogenic genes. It may regulate alternative splicing of target genes during adipogenesis.
