ZNF431

Description

The ZNF431 (zinc finger protein 431) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

ZNF431 is a sequence-specific DNA binding protein that acts as a transcriptional repressor. It inhibits the expression of target genes by recruiting histone deacetylases HDAC1 and HDAC2, which modify histones to make DNA less accessible to transcription factors. During embryonic development, ZNF431 specifically represses the expression of PTCH1, a key regulator of the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway. ZNF431 is crucial for osteoblast differentiation, the process of forming new bone cells, and for responding to SHH signaling. The protein binds to a specific DNA sequence, 5‘-GCGCCC-3‘, located in the promoter region of PTCH1.

ZNF431 is also known as ZFP932.
