ZFAND1

Description

The ZFAND1 (zinc finger AN1-type containing 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

ZFAND1 plays a crucial role in regulating the turnover of cytoplasmic stress granules (SGs). SGs are dynamic structures that form in response to cellular stress, helping maintain protein homeostasis by temporarily halting protein production. ZFAND1 specifically promotes the clearance of SGs induced by arsenite, a toxic chemical. This process involves recruiting two key cellular machines: the ubiquitin-selective ATPase VCP and the 26S proteasome. These complexes work together to efficiently degrade damaged and ubiquitinated SG proteins during recovery from arsenite stress. This precise degradation process prevents the abnormal breakdown of SGs through autophagy, ensuring proper cellular recovery.
