ZER1
Description
The ZER1 (zyg-11 related cell cycle regulator) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.
ZER1, also known as Hzyg, Zyg-11 homolog B-like protein, or Zyg11b-like protein, acts as a substrate adapter subunit in the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex ZYG11B-CUL2-Elongin BC. It targets substrates containing N-terminal degrons for degradation by the proteasome, recognizing the first four residues of these substrates. This process is involved in the clearance of proteolytic fragments generated by caspase cleavage during apoptosis, as N-terminal glycine degrons are abundant at caspase cleavage sites. ZER1 is also critical in the quality control of protein N-myristoylation, where N-terminal glycine degrons are exposed following failed N-myristoylation.
