XPR1
Description
The XPR1 (xenotropic and polytropic retrovirus receptor 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
XPR1 is an inorganic ion transporter that mediates the export of phosphate ions across the plasma membrane. It plays a critical role in phosphate homeostasis, preventing the buildup of phosphate within cells and potentially harmful calcium phosphate precipitation, which helps to maintain normal calcium signaling. While the specific mechanism of phosphate transport (whether it is electrogenic, electroneutral, or coupled to other ions) is still under investigation, XPR1 is known to bind inositol hexakisphosphate (Ins6P) and similar inositol polyphosphates, such as 5-diphospho-inositol pentakisphosphate (5-InsP7). These molecules are important intracellular signaling messengers that are involved in regulating phosphate flux.
