XKR9

Description

The XKR9 (XK related 9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

XKR9, in its processed form, acts as a phospholipid scramblase. This means it facilitates the movement of phosphatidylserine (PS) from the inner to the outer leaflet of the cell membrane. This process is crucial during apoptosis, as PS exposure on the cell surface serves as a specific signal for engulfment by phagocytic cells. This process helps to efficiently remove apoptotic cells from the body, preventing inflammation and maintaining tissue homeostasis.

XKR9 is also known as XRG9, hXKR9.
