WFDC1
Description
The WFDC1 (WAP four-disulfide core domain 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.
WFDC1 gene encodes a protein belonging to the WAP-type four disulfide core domain family. This family features a characteristic WAP signature motif with eight cysteines forming four disulfide bonds, often acting as protease inhibitors. The WFDC1 protein shares significant similarity with the rat ps20 protein, initially identified as a growth inhibitor. Notably, WFDC1 is located on chromosome 16q24, a region frequently experiencing loss of heterozygosity in cancers, including prostate, breast, and hepatocellular cancers, along with Wilms' tumor. Due to its chromosomal location and potential growth inhibitory nature, WFDC1 is proposed as a tumor suppressor gene.
WFDC1 is also known as PS20.
