Description

The VPS8 (VPS8 subunit of CORVET complex) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

VPS8 is a protein that plays a role in the transport of proteins within cells. It is specifically involved in the endocytic pathway, which is responsible for the uptake and recycling of molecules from outside the cell. VPS8 is part of a complex called CORVET, which helps to connect and fuse different types of vesicles within the endocytic pathway. This complex is thought to be involved in the transition between different types of endosomes, structures that hold and process incoming molecules. VPS8 interacts with other proteins, including RAB5C and TGFBRAP1, to perform its function.

VPS8 plays a role in vesicle-mediated protein trafficking within the endocytic membrane transport pathway. It is believed to be a component of the CORVET endosomal tethering complex, which is thought to be involved in the transition from Rab5 to Rab7 endosomes, potentially with the involvement of MON1A/B. VPS8 might facilitate tethering and docking during SNARE-mediated membrane fusion by binding to SNAREs and SNARE complexes. The CORVET complex is proposed to act as a Rab5 effector to mediate early endosome fusion, potentially in specific endosome subpopulations. VPS8 is predominantly found in APPL1-containing endosomes.
