Description
The VPS52 (VPS52 subunit of GARP complex) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.
VPS52, or Vacuolar protein sorting-associated protein 52 homolog, is a protein encoded by the VPS52 gene in humans. The protein is similar to the yeast suppressor of actin mutations 2 gene (SAC2). The yeast protein is a subunit of the tetrameric Golgi-associated retrograde protein complex, which is involved in vesicle trafficking from both early and late endosomes back to the trans-Golgi network. The VPS52 gene is located on chromosome 6 in a head-to-head orientation with the gene encoding ribosomal protein S18.
VPS52 is involved in retrograde transport from early and late endosomes to the trans-Golgi network (TGN) as a component of the GARP complex. The GARP complex is essential for the recycling of mannose 6-phosphate receptors between the TGN and endosomes, which is critical for the proper sorting of acid hydrolases, such as CTSD, to lysosomes. VPS52 is also a component of the EARP complex, which is involved in endocytic recycling. The EARP complex associates with Rab4-positive endosomes and facilitates the recycling of internalized transferrin receptor (TFRC) to the plasma membrane.
