The VEGFB (vascular endothelial growth factor B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
VEGF-B, also known as VEGF-B, is a protein encoded by the VEGF-B gene. It is a growth factor belonging to the vascular endothelial growth factor family, with VEGF-A being the most well-known member. Unlike VEGF-A, VEGF-B plays a less prominent role in blood vessel formation. While VEGF-A is crucial for blood vessel development and in pathological conditions, VEGF-B seems to be involved primarily in maintaining newly formed blood vessels during these conditions. VEGF-B also plays a significant role in various types of neurons. It is essential for protecting neurons in the retina and cerebral cortex during strokes, as well as motor neurons during motor neuron diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. VEGF-B exerts its effects through the FLT1 receptor, though the role of the co-receptor NRP in VEGF-B-mediated effects remains unclear. Additionally, VEGF-B has been found to regulate endothelial uptake and transport of fatty acids in the heart and skeletal muscle. VEGF-B interacts with FLT1, NRP1, and NRP2.
VEGF-B167 binds heparin and neuropilin-1, while the binding of VEGF-B186 to neuropilin-1 is regulated by proteolysis.
