Description
The VAMP3 (vesicle associated membrane protein 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
Vesicle-associated membrane protein 3 is a protein encoded by the VAMP3 gene in humans. It is part of a protein complex crucial for the docking and fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane. VAMP3 belongs to the vesicle-associated membrane protein (VAMP)/synaptobrevin family. Due to its high homology to other VAMPs, wide tissue distribution, and subcellular localization, VAMP3 was identified as the human equivalent of the rodent cellubrevin. Interestingly, in platelets, VAMP3 resides in a compartment that remains inactive upon calcium or thrombin stimulation. VAMP3 has been shown to interact with several other proteins, including BCAP31, BVES, SNAP23, STX4, and STX6.
VAMP3 acts as a SNARE protein, mediating vesicular transport from the late endosomes to the trans-Golgi network.
