UTS2

Description

The UTS2 (urotensin 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

Urotensin-II (U-II) is a peptide ligand that is the strongest known vasoconstrictor. Its role in various biological systems, including the cardiovascular, nervous, endocrine, and renal systems, makes it a potential target for new drug development. In humans, Urotensin-2 is encoded by the UTS2 gene. It was initially discovered in the Goby fish, and its presence in mammals was confirmed in 1998. The U-II gene is located on chromosome 1p36. U-II's peptide length varies across species due to different cleavage sites. In humans, U-II has 11 amino acids. The core sequence necessary for both U-II and Urotensin II-Related Peptide (URP) is essential for their biological functions.

UTS2 is also known as PRO1068, U-II, UCN2, UII.
