UTP6

Description

The UTP6 (UTP6 small subunit processome component) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

UTP6, also known as U3 small nucleolar RNA-associated protein 6 homolog, is a protein encoded by the UTP6 gene in humans.

UTP6 plays a crucial role in the assembly of the small subunit (SSU) processome, the initial precursor of the small eukaryotic ribosomal subunit. Within the nucleolus, UTP6 interacts with various ribosome biogenesis factors, an RNA chaperone, and ribosomal proteins, facilitating the maturation of pre-rRNA. This process involves RNA folding, modifications, rearrangements, and cleavage. UTP6 also participates in the targeted degradation of pre-ribosomal RNA by the RNA exosome, ensuring efficient ribosome assembly. Notably, UTP6 is involved in the nucleolar processing of pre-18S ribosomal RNA.

UTP6 is also known as C17orf40, HCA66.
