USP21

Description

The USP21 (ubiquitin specific peptidase 21) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

USP21, also known as Deubiquitinating enzyme 21, Ubiquitin thioesterase 21, or Ubiquitin-specific-processing protease 21, is a deubiquitinase that removes ubiquitin from various substrates, including histone H2A, BAZ2A/TIP5, and 40S ribosomal proteins. Its deubiquitinase activity plays a role in gene expression regulation, ribosome quality control, and NEDD8 signaling.

USP21 acts as a deubiquitinase, removing ubiquitin from various substrates, including histone H2A, BAZ2A/TIP5, and 40S ribosomal proteins. Deubiquitination of histone H2A relieves transcriptional repression, contributing to gene expression regulation. USP21 also removes NEDD8 from NEDD8 conjugates. In ribosome quality control, USP21 counteracts ZNF598-mediated ubiquitination of 40S ribosomal proteins, potentially influencing ribosome function.

USP21 is also known as USP16, USP23.
