Description
The UPK1A (uroplakin 1A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.
UPK1A encodes a protein belonging to the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. These proteins are cell-surface proteins characterized by four hydrophobic domains and are involved in cell development, activation, growth, and motility. UPK1A is found in the asymmetric unit membrane (AUM) where it interacts with other tetraspanin family members. It may play a role in normal bladder epithelial physiology, potentially regulating membrane permeability of superficial umbrella cells or stabilizing the apical membrane through interactions between the AUM and cytoskeleton.
