The UBE2G2 (ubiquitin conjugating enzyme E2 G2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.
UBE2G2 (Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 G2) is a protein involved in ubiquitination, a crucial cellular process for targeting proteins for degradation. It belongs to the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family and shares 100% sequence identity with its mouse counterpart. UBE2G2 is expressed ubiquitously, with high levels in adult muscle. Two isoforms are produced through alternative splicing. UBE2G2 interacts with various proteins, including ubiquitin, AMFR (E3 gp78), and SYVN1 (Hrd1 RING).
UBE2G2 accepts ubiquitin from the E1 complex and attaches it to other proteins (PubMed:20061386). It catalyzes the formation of 'Lys-48'-linked polyubiquitin chains in vitro (PubMed:20061386). UBE2G2 is involved in the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway (PubMed:22607976). It is essential for the sterol-induced ubiquitination of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, leading to its degradation by the proteasome (PubMed:23223569).
