TUT1

Description

The TUT1 (terminal uridylyl transferase 1, U6 snRNA-specific) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

TUT1 is a human gene that encodes a protein with poly(A) polymerase activity, involved in the 3'-end processing of pre-mRNAs. It also plays a role in the uridylylation of U6 snRNA.

TUT1 is a poly(A) polymerase that adds a poly(A) tail to the 3' end of specific pre-mRNAs. It is localized to nuclear speckles with PIP5K1A and is involved in polyadenylation of a specific set of mRNAs including HMOX1. In addition to polyadenylation, TUT1 is required for the 3' end cleavage of pre-mRNAs. It binds to the 3'UTR of targeted pre-mRNAs and recruits and assembles the CPSF complex on the 3'UTR of pre-mRNAs. TUT1 also has uridylyltransferase activity and is a specific terminal uridylyltransferase for U6 snRNA. It restores the four 3'-terminal UMP-residues found in newly transcribed U6 snRNA. TUT1 is not involved in replication-dependent histone mRNA degradation.

TUT1 is also known as PAPD2, RBM21, STARPAP, TENT1, TUTase, URLC6.
