TPH1

Description

The TPH1 (tryptophan hydroxylase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

Tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1) is an enzyme encoded by the TPH1 gene in humans. It is responsible for converting tryptophan into 5-hydroxytryptophan, the precursor to serotonin. TPH1 was initially thought to be the only tryptophan hydroxylase gene, but a second form, TPH2, was later discovered. TPH1 is found in various tissues throughout the body, including the intestines, pancreas, and immune cells. While it is not expressed in the brain, variations in the TPH1 gene have been linked to personality traits and neuropsychiatric disorders. TPH1 is a crucial enzyme for the production of serotonin, which plays a vital role in regulating mood, sleep, appetite, and other bodily functions.

TPH1 is also known as TPRH, TRPH.
