The TMPRSS11D (transmembrane serine protease 11D) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.
TMPRSS11D, encoded by the TMPRSS11D gene, is a trypsin-like serine protease secreted by submucosal serous glands onto mucous membranes. As a type II integral membrane protein, it shares structural similarities with other proteases like hepsin, enteropeptidase, acrosin, and mast cell tryptase. While the catalytic region exhibits significant homology, the noncatalytic region is unique. TMPRSS11D likely plays a role in host defense on mucous membranes, potentially working independently or in collaboration with other components of airway secretions.
TMPRSS11D contributes to host defense by acting on the mucous membrane, either independently or in conjunction with other airway components. It plays a role in processing ACE2, a key protein involved in the entry of certain viruses. TMPRSS11D also activates the spike glycoprotein of human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) through proteolytic cleavage, facilitating the fusion of the virus with host cell membranes. This activation involves the cleavage of arginine residues in specific peptide sequences and is most efficient at a pH of 8.6.
