TMPO


Description

The TMPO (thymopoietin) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

The TMPO gene encodes three isoforms of the protein thymopoietin: alpha (75 kDa), beta (51 kDa), and gamma (39 kDa). These isoforms are ubiquitously expressed in all cells. TMPO alpha is diffusely expressed in the cell nucleus, while TMPO beta and gamma are localized to the nuclear membrane. TMPO beta is a human homolog of the murine protein LAP2, which plays a role in regulating nuclear architecture by binding lamin B1 and chromosomes. This interaction is regulated by phosphorylation during mitosis. The nuclear localization of the three TMPO isoforms suggests they are unlikely to play a role in CD90 induction.

TMPO may help direct the assembly of the nuclear lamina, contributing to the structural organization of the nuclear envelope. It may act as a receptor for lamin filament attachment to the inner nuclear membrane. TMPO could be involved in controlling the initiation of DNA replication through its interaction with NAKAP95.
