TMEM63B

Description

The TMEM63B (transmembrane protein 63B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

TMEM63B acts as an osmosensitive calcium-permeable cation channel, converting mechanical stimuli into ion flow. It functions as an inner ear osmosensor, crucial for normal hearing and the survival of outer hair cells (OHCs). TMEM63B mediates calcium-dependent regulatory volume decrease in OHCs, essential for their survival. It maintains the morphological integrity of OHCs under hypotonic conditions, mediating hypo-osmolarity-induced calcium influx and activating calcium-dependent potassium channels, further contributing to OHC morphology maintenance.

TMEM63B is also known as C6orf110.
