TMEM61

Description

The TMEM61 (transmembrane protein 61) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

TMEM61 is a protein encoded by the TMEM61 gene on chromosome 1 in humans. It is highly expressed in the kidneys, adrenal glands, and pituitary tissues, particularly in the intestinal regions. The protein does not promote cancer growth, unlike other transmembrane proteins in the region. However, inhibition of TMEM61 by secondary factors can impair normal kidney function. TMEM61 shares many orthologs and has been present on Earth for millions of years. The gene spans 11,661 base pairs, located on the plus strand of chromosome 1 at locus 1p32.3, between LOC124904184 and BSND. It has seven mRNA transcript variants according to NCBI RefSeq. The protein can be identified using UniProt with the identifier Q8N0U2.

TMEM61, while not a cancer promoter, plays a crucial role in normal kidney function. Its inhibition can lead to disruptions in kidney activity.
