TMEM164

Description

The TMEM164 (transmembrane protein 164) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome X.

TMEM164 is a positive regulator of ferroptosis. It selectively promotes the formation of autophagosomes during ferroptosis, a process that is distinct from starvation-induced autophagy. This regulation involves the degradation of ferritin, GPX4, and lipid droplets, leading to increased iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Ultimately, these actions contribute to the promotion of ferroptotic cell death.

TMEM164 is also known as bB360B22.3.
