TMEM161B

Description

The TMEM161B (transmembrane protein 161B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

TMEM161B is crucial for maintaining a regular heartbeat during fetal development and is essential for newborn survival. It achieves this by regulating the flow of potassium and calcium ions in heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes). By inhibiting these currents, TMEM161B helps ensure the timely return of the heart's electrical activity to its resting state (repolarization), which is vital for a normal heart rhythm.

TMEM161B is also known as FLB3342, PRO1313.
