TIMM9

Description

The TIMM9 (translocase of inner mitochondrial membrane 9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 14.

TIMM9, also known as Mitochondrial import inner membrane translocase subunit Tim9, is an enzyme encoded by the TIMM9 gene in humans. It belongs to a family of evolutionarily conserved proteins that assemble into heterooligomeric complexes within the mitochondrial intermembrane space.

TIMM9 acts as a chaperone within the mitochondrial intermembrane space, facilitating the import and insertion of multi-pass transmembrane proteins into the inner mitochondrial membrane. This protein may also be essential for transferring beta-barrel precursors from the TOM complex to the SAM complex, located on the outer membrane. Its chaperone-like activity safeguards hydrophobic precursors from aggregation and guides them through the intermembrane space.

TIMM9 is also known as TIM9, TIM9A.
