Description
The THOC3 (THO complex subunit 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
THOC3 is essential for the efficient export of polyadenylated RNA and spliced mRNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. It is a component of the THO subcomplex within the TREX complex, which plays a crucial role in coupling mRNA transcription, processing, and export. The TREX complex specifically binds to spliced mRNA, not unspliced pre-mRNA, and is recruited to spliced mRNAs independently of transcription. It binds to mRNA upstream of the exon-junction complex (EJC) and is recruited to a region near the 5' end of the mRNA in a splicing- and cap-dependent manner. THOC3 facilitates mRNA export via the TAP/NFX1 pathway. The TREX complex is essential for the export of intronless mRNAs from Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and for infectious virus production.
