TDRD1

Description

The TDRD1 (tudor domain containing 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

TDRD1 plays a critical role in spermatogenesis by suppressing transposable elements (TEs) and preventing their mobilization, ensuring the integrity of the germline. It functions through the piRNA pathway, which represses TEs during meiosis by forming complexes of piRNAs and Piwi proteins. This pathway controls the methylation and subsequent silencing of transposons. TDRD1 is essential for directing Piwi proteins to the meiotic nuage, a specialized structure involved in germ cell development. It further regulates the piRNA pathway by ensuring the correct transcripts enter the piRNA pool and preventing cellular transcripts from entering the pathway. TDRD1 may facilitate the recruitment of factors that ensure accurate entry of transcripts and piRNAs into Piwi proteins.

TDRD1 is also known as CT41.1.
