SYCP2

Description

The SYCP2 (synaptonemal complex protein 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

SYCP2 is a crucial protein in the formation and function of the synaptonemal complex (SC), a protein structure that forms during meiotic prophase. It's a major component of the axial/lateral elements of the SC, playing a significant role in its assembly. SYCP2's presence is essential for proper synapsis of chromosomes during meiosis in both oocytes and spermatocytes, ultimately impacting male and female fertility. It's also required for the incorporation of another key protein, SYCP3, into the SC. SYCP2 may also contribute to the organization of chromatin by interacting with DNA scaffold attachment regions. Interestingly, SYCP2 requires SYCP3 for its own integration into the SC but doesn't depend on SYCP1.

SYCP2 is also known as SCP-2, SCP2, SPGF1.
