The SUN1 (Sad1 and UNC84 domain containing 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.
SUN1 is a protein involved in the connection between the nuclear lamina and the cytoskeleton. It is a component of the LINC complex, which plays a role in nuclear movement, positioning, and the transmission of mechanical forces across the nuclear envelope.
SUN1 is a crucial component of the LINC (Linker of Nucleoskeleton and Cytoskeleton) complex, which bridges the nuclear lamina and the cytoskeleton. This connection is vital for transmitting mechanical forces across the nuclear envelope, regulating nuclear movement, and positioning. SUN1 is essential for interkinetic nuclear migration (INM), nucleokinesis, and centrosome-nucleus coupling during neuronal and glial migration in the brain. It plays a role in attaching telomeres to the nuclear envelope during prophase of meiosis, likely through the SUN1/2:KASH5 LINC complex. SUN1 is involved in gametogenesis, influencing the expression of coding and non-coding RNAs crucial for gamete formation. It contributes to the proper distribution of nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) and facilitates the localization of SYNE4 within the nuclear envelope. SUN1 may participate in nuclear remodeling during sperm head formation in spermatogenesis. Furthermore, it might be involved in DNA repair by suppressing non-homologous end joining repair, promoting the repair of DNA cross-links.
