Description

The SUMO3 (small ubiquitin like modifier 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 21.

SUMO3, or Small ubiquitin-related modifier 3, is a protein encoded by the SUMO3 gene in humans. SUMO proteins, including SUMO3, and ubiquitin (MIM 191339) modify proteins after translation, affecting their metabolism and function. Unlike ubiquitination, which tags proteins for degradation, sumoylation participates in processes like nuclear transport, transcription regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability.

SUMO3, a ubiquitin-like protein, can attach to target lysines as a monomer or polymer. Unlike ubiquitin, it doesn't directly promote protein degradation and might even oppose it. SUMO3 plays a role in various cellular processes like nuclear transport, DNA replication and repair, mitosis, and signal transduction. Its covalent attachment to substrates requires activation by the E1 complex SAE1-SAE2, linkage to the E2 enzyme UBE2I, and can be facilitated by E3 ligases such as PIAS1-4, RANBP2, or CBX4. SUMO3 regulates the sumoylation status of SETX.
