Description
The SULT1B1 (sulfotransferase family 1B member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.
Sulfotransferase family cytosolic 1B member 1 (SULT1B1) is an enzyme encoded by the SULT1B1 gene in humans. Sulfotransferase enzymes catalyze the sulfate conjugation of many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs, and xenobiotic compounds. These cytosolic enzymes have different tissue distributions and substrate specificities. The gene structure (number and length of exons) is similar among family members. However, the total genomic length of this gene is greater than that of all other SULT1 genes.
SULT1B1 is a sulfotransferase that utilizes 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) as a sulfonate donor to catalyze the sulfate conjugation of dopamine, small phenols such as 1-naphthol and p-nitrophenol, and thyroid hormones, including 3,3'-diiodothyronine, triiodothyronine (T3), and reverse triiodothyronine (rT3). This enzyme may play a role in gut microbiota-host metabolic interactions by O-sulfonating 4-ethylphenol (4-EP), a dietary tyrosine-derived metabolite produced by gut bacteria. 4-EPS crosses the blood-brain barrier and may negatively regulate oligodendrocyte maturation and myelination, affecting the functional connectivity of different brain regions associated with the limbic system.
