STRA8
Description
The STRA8 (stimulated by retinoic acid 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.
STRA8 is a crucial factor initiating meiosis in both male and female germ cells. In females, it operates downstream of ZGLP1, driving the meiotic program by facilitating pre-meiotic DNA replication and subsequent events within the meiotic prophase. In males, it promotes spermatogonial differentiation alongside its role in initiating meiosis. STRA8 forms a complex with MEIOSIN, directly activating the transcription of specific meiotic genes. This activation plays a pivotal role in shifting the cell cycle from mitosis to meiosis.
