Description
The STAT6 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.
Signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) is a transcription factor belonging to the Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) family of proteins. STAT proteins transmit signals from a receptor complex to the nucleus and activate gene expression. STAT6 is activated by growth factors and cytokines, primarily interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13). The STAT6 gene is located on chromosome 12q13.3-q14.1, spans over 19 kb, and consists of 23 exons. STAT6 shares structural similarities with other STAT proteins and contains an N-terminal domain, DNA binding domain, SH3-like domain, SH2 domain, and transactivation domain (TAD). Activation by IL-4 or IL-13 leads to tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT6, resulting in the formation of STAT6 homodimers that bind specific DNA elements via a DNA-binding domain.
