ST8SIA5

Description

The ST8SIA5 (ST8 alpha-N-acetyl-neuraminide alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.

This enzyme plays a crucial role in building complex sugar molecules called gangliosides. Specifically, it converts existing gangliosides like GD1a, GT1b, GM1b, and GD3 into different forms: GD1c, GT1a, GQ1b, GP1c, and GT3.

ST8SIA5 is also known as SIAT8-E, SIAT8E, ST8SiaV.
