SSC5D

Description

The SSC5D (scavenger receptor cysteine rich family member with 5 domains) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

SSC5D binds to components of the extracellular matrix and recognizes pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) found on the surfaces of bacteria and fungi. This recognition acts as a pattern recognition receptor (PRR) that triggers the aggregation of these pathogens, thereby inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines. Notably, SSC5D does not exhibit direct antimicrobial activity. It is believed to contribute to the innate immune defense and maintenance of specific epithelial tissues.

SSC5D is also known as S5D-SRCRB.
