SPON2

Description

The SPON2 (spondin 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

Spondin 2, also known as mindin, is a protein encoded by the SPON2 gene in humans.

Spondin-2 acts as a cell adhesion protein, promoting the adhesion and growth of hippocampal embryonic neurons. It directly interacts with bacteria and their components, functioning as an opsonin, which aids macrophages in engulfing and eliminating bacteria. This protein plays a crucial role in triggering the innate immune response and acts as a unique pattern-recognition molecule within the extracellular matrix (ECM) for microbial pathogens. It binds to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

SPON2 is also known as DIL-1, DIL1, M-SPONDIN, MINDIN.
