Description

The SPIB (Spi-B transcription factor) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

SPIB is a gene that encodes the Spi-B protein, a transcription factor belonging to the ETS family. It binds to a specific DNA sequence called the PU box, which is important for regulating gene expression. Spi-B interacts with other proteins like MAPK3 and MAPK8 and plays a role in the development of plasmacytoid dendritic cells, which are important for immune responses.

Spi-B is a sequence-specific transcriptional activator that binds to the PU-box, a purine-rich DNA sequence (5'-GAGGAA-3') that can act as a lymphoid-specific enhancer. It promotes the development of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs), also known as type 2 DC precursors (pre-DC2) or natural interferon (IFN)-producing cells. These cells have the ability to produce large amounts of interferon and block viral replication. Spi-B may be required for B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling, which is essential for normal B-cell development and antigenic stimulation.
