SMYD2

Description

The SMYD2 (SET and MYND domain containing 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

SMYD2 is a protein-lysine N-methyltransferase that modifies both histones and non-histone proteins, including p53 and RB1. It specifically trimethylates histone H3 Lys-4 (H3K4me3) in vivo, an activity dependent on interaction with HSP90alpha. SMYD2 exhibits even higher methyltransferase activity on p53, monomethylating Lys-370. This methylation reduces p53's DNA-binding and subsequent transcriptional regulation activities. SMYD2 also monomethylates RB1 at Lys-860.

SMYD2 is also known as HSKM-B, KMT3C, ZMYND14.
