SMOX

Description

The SMOX (spermine oxidase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

SMOX encodes spermine oxidase, an enzyme involved in the polyamine metabolic pathway. It catalyzes the oxidation of polyamines, potentially representing a new class of catabolic enzymes in mammals. Multiple transcript variants have been identified, leading to four active isoenzymes with distinctive biochemical characteristics and substrate specificities. This suggests additional levels of complexity in polyamine catabolism.

SMOX is also known as C20orf16, PAO, PAO-1, PAO1, PAOH, PAOH1, SMO.
